What is TBHQ?

TBHQ (tertiary-butylhydroquinone, E319 in Europe) is a synthetic antioxidant that does the same job as BHA and BHT, and FDA's rule allows it to be used alone or together with them. JECFA, the joint FAO/WHO expert committee on food additives, set its intake guideline in 1997, and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) reviewed it in 2004 and refined its exposure estimates in 2016.

Why it's used, and where you'll find it

Oils and fats go rancid when they react with oxygen. TBHQ slows that reaction and extends shelf life. The rules that name it centre on fats and oils: Canada lists fats, oils, lard and shortening, the EU list includes frying fats, and the US limit is expressed as a share of a food's oil or fat content.

The daily intake guideline

JECFA set an acceptable daily intake (ADI) of 0 to 0.7 mg per kg of body weight for TBHQ in 1997, and EFSA confirmed the 0.7 figure in 2004. The ADI is the daily benchmark regulators use for long-term intake. [4, 5, 8]

How much people actually eat

In 2004 EFSA concluded that adult exposure did not exceed the ADI, but that infants could exceed it if TBHQ were used in infant formula. EFSA's 2016 refined assessment found that if every food contained TBHQ at the maximum permitted level, high-intake toddlers and children would exceed the ADI; with realistic use-level data, no population group did. Early lab findings on the immune system

A 2025 mouse study reported that dietary TBHQ increased allergic sensitisation to a food protein and worsened anaphylaxis. This is an early animal finding, not evidence that TBHQ causes allergies in people, and not a regulatory conclusion. [6]

Who might choose to avoid it

The sources cited here do not single out a group who must avoid TBHQ at permitted levels, although EFSA flagged infants as exceeding the guideline if TBHQ were used in infant formula. Some people limit it because of the early animal immune findings or to avoid synthetic additives.
